A Journey of Truth
I’m sitting in my office right now and I’m surfing some website pertaining to issues of politics, world events, and the like. I’m amazed at how divisive and painfully ignorant our world has become. No one seeks truth…everyone runs on opinions (half-truths at best). To give up and settle on opinion and hearsay is baffling to me.
Then, I start asking the question, “What is truth?” For me, personally, I know truth because I know the Truth (Jesus Christ). Let me explain a little further. This is what philosophy would call reality and the metaphysical. For example, I know a tree is green because I have an idea (deep in my brain) about what green looks like. Therefore, the green tree is green precisely because I have an idea about what green should look like. Thus, I look at the green tree and exclaim, “My, oh my, there is a GREEN tree!”
The same holds true for this understanding of truth. If people knew the Truth (capital T) before they sought truth (lower case t), what difference would that make in our world? If for once, the picketer of the abortion clinic would understand the Truth (love, grace, and mercy in the person of Jesus Christ) before he/she got inebriated and hell bent on their individual pursuit of truth (shaming sinners, pointing out their sins), our world may look a tad bit different.
In the early church, you did not find Christians. The name was not associated with followers of Christ as it is today. Instead, they were known as followers of “the Way”. How remarkable is that? These people’s identity rested in the journey on which they had set out. This “Way” was completely counter-cultural and paved a new route in a world that had consistently followed the well-worn path of domination, violence, and power.
These followers of the “Way” knew Truth. Jesus not only died for the sins but His death was the single most important moment in history. His death opened the door for a new way of life. Jesus was not just a Savior but also a Lord. For no matter how you cut it, an innocent man was put to death because he challenged the powers that be. The man of Jesus stood strong against the hatred, betrayal and violence of the world and said, “There is an alternative!” For doing so, he lost His life.
Could Christians today stop hiding behind their title and become journeymen on the path of Truth (Jesus)? Could we (myself included) realize that there is truth and it is contingent on the revelation of Truth? Could this carpenter’s son from Galilee show us a few tricks about how to deal with people and see them as His Father sees them? Are we ready to stop being rank-and-file followers who list out the world’s woes and instead become citizens of a kingdom, the Kingdom of God, who have a special ministry, from the Chief himself, to reconcile the world back to it’s loving Lord?
I was just wondering this as I was reading the news this morning.
