Prayer - Hearing God's Voice

January 17, 2013

Ever feel unsure about prayer? It’s not uncommon to feel unequipped and embarrassed to pray (especially in front of others), and sometimes this happens because we don’t even know where to start. The truth is, there’s no set “rules” to praying, the same way there aren’t any set rules to talking. But there are some things we can do to become better listeners and better at conversation. Here are some helpful things to remember during prayer to help orient yourself toward God.

7 S’s of Prayer

1. Sychophancy // Psalm 8:1
Aka “sweet talkin’ Jesus” or simply “praise.” God will still listen to you even if you don’t start out praising Him, but don’t you feel great when someone encourages you? Why not begin by remembering the goodness of God, cause He does quite a bit for you.

2. Sin // Psalm 66:18
Scriptures tell us that if we cherish sin in our heart, then God will not hear (why would you listen to someone who has already predetermined to offend you?). The good news is, Christ has already taken care of our sin on the cross, so we have no more need for shame, guilt, and death. Acknowledge our sin, cast it away, repent, and move forward.

3. Self // 2 Cor. 10:3-5
Because of the Spirit, we can have victory over our chaotic minds. Get rid of all that is not of God and get out of the way. If something keeps coming up when you’re trying to still your mind, ask God if He wants to say anything about it.

4. Satan // James 4:7
The enemy has no authority other than what the world gives him.  Cast him away in the name of Christ.

5. Spirit // John 10:27
It takes time and experience to become acquainted with anyone. It’s the same with God, but you can start today! Invite the Spirit to come and reign, guiding and directing us in what to do, speak, and pray.

6. Silence // Psalm 46:10
Shut up and listen to what the Lord has to say.

7. Sycophancy (again)
Thank God once more for the privilege of listening.

Why is this so important?  Prayer is more than just some nice words we offer up together to appease God and make ourselves sound holy.  Prayer is our living and active connection with the Lord of the universe, and if we neglect to pray we neglect the guidance of the Lord and move forward prideful and unequipped.

May you pray earnestly and come to know and recognize the voice of your Father in heaven!
