Ask Anything - Is God's perspective of time the same as ours?
Hey guys! Thanks for writing some questions for the Ask Anything box. We'll talk about your questions a little more next Sunday night, but here's some short answers for you to be mulling over throughout the week:
Ask Anything, Question 1: Is God's time the same as ours? (1 hour to us = 1 hour to God, or does 1 hour to us = 1 year to God)
Great question! First, see Psalm 90:4 and especially 2 Peter 3:8. It's important to note that the point in these scriptures is not to give an accurate scale of how our time is relevant to God's time (i.e. 1 human year = 7 dog years = 365,000 God years). Instead, scripture is pointing to the fact that God operates differently than we do. It is both true that 1,000 years are like a day to God AND that 1 day is like a thousand years to God. God created time and thus God transcends time. Both scriptures hint at the notion that it's kinda silly to talk about God as being "slow" to fulfill His promises, because that assumes God is operating on a deadline that He didn't set. Much like Gandalf, God is never late nor early, He arrives precisely when He means to.
